MESSAGES FROM THE ADMIN TEAM
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY
Thank you to all our parents who made time to complete the School Opinion Survey. We value your feedback.
SPELLATHON
Our Year 5 families have realised that some of the words were duplicated in their list. This has now been rectified and they have a new list on blue paper. Heats will begin in Week 7. Happy learning!
Money raised from the Spellathon will go towards the refurbishment of the Year 2/3/4 playground, a very worthy cause.
POMONA’S GOT TALENT
Heats will kick off in Week 7 (No Yr 6’s involved in these) and the grand final will hopefully be held in Week 9. The overall winner will perform at Pomona in the Park in November.
The heats will take place during second break. We have singers, dancers and even a puppet show. Truly amazing, great talent!
STUDENT COUNCIL/EARLY ACT FUNDRAISER
So far this year our band of students have been busy raising funds for new mats for sports days and helping the Rotarians fund medical access for children overseas. The upcoming fundraiser will be to support the training of PTSD dogs in our local area. This will be in the form of a free dress day and will be held on 18th August, all for a gold coin donation. Please remember sun-safe clothing and closed-in shoes.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Thursday 1st September is set for our school photos. Photo envelopes will go home next week. Sibling photo envelopes will be available from the Office. Sibling photos are only for children who attend our school and will be taken in the school Library at 8.00 am.
On photo day a number of special group photos will be taken, and these envelopes will be available soon. The special groups are:
- School Leaders
- Rock band
- School band
- RoboTREC – Years 3 and 4
- RoboTREC – Years 5 and 6
TRANSITION TO SCHOOL
Planning is well underway to welcome our pre-preps to our school in 2023. The Principal’s afternoon tea and tour will be held on the 7th September and our ‘get set for Prep’ mornings will be held in Term 4.
PROCEDURES FOR………….
UPDATING PARENT/CARER CONTACT DETAILS
Please ensure our office have your correct contact details – telephone numbers (for us to contact you – particularly important in the case of an emergency with your child), and email address (for invoices, newsletter, etc). Please also ensure that your child/ren’s emergency contacts are up to date.
ADMINSTERING MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If your child requires staff to administer medication at school, please contact the school office in the first instance to discuss your child’s requirements.
Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:
- has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)
- is in its original container
- has an attached pharmacy label Pharmacy label must show prescribing doctor’s name.
Office staff will ask you to complete and sign Section 1 of the Administration of medication at school record sheet.
School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope that all parents will acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.
HEAD LICE
The presence of head lice is a very common childhood occurrence in the community. The primary responsibility for the management and treatment of head lice in students belongs with parents.
As a school we notify parents via a letter if a parent has reported to the school that their child has head lice. This letter is sent to all the students in the class.
Students who are suspected of having head lice or eggs present in their hair are not excluded from class or school. However, if notified by the school, a parent may choose to remove their child from school to administer immediate treatment to their child.
REGULAR ATTENDANCE
EVERY DAY COUNTS – the message is the same in 2020. The simple fact is, the more regularly your child attends school, the more they learn. Aside from illness and bereavement, for example, attendance is expected every day. Keep an eye out on Facebook for regular videos from Education Queensland. If for any reason your child will be absent from school, please ring our 24/7 absentee line on 54 808 260 prior to 8.45am.
STAFF MEETING DAY - TUESDAY
Parents, please be advised that on Tuesday afternoon I request that all teaching staff attend a meeting which starts at 3:00pm. Staff will leave their rooms quickly once the bell rings to signal the end of the day. If you have anything urgent to discuss with your child’s teacher please leave a message at the office for that teacher

DISTRICT ATHLETICS 2022
On Tuesday the 26th of July, 20 Pomona students attended the Noosa District Athletics Trials held at Girraween Sports Complex, Noosa Heads. These students were selected from our own school Athletics Carnival held in term 2 and did a fantastic job at representing Pomona State School!
All of our students tried extremely hard in the hope of finishing in the top 2 or 3 of their events so that they could represent Noosa District at the regional trials.
We were fortunate enough this year to have 3 Students included in the Noosa District Athletics team:
Billie M – 10 Years Girls High
Jump (3rd)
Macey H – 11 years Girls Long Jump (2nd)
Bridie M – 11 Years Girls High Jump (3rd)
Well done to all Pomona students who represented our school for excellent behavior and having a go! Special thanks to Mrs. Laird and Shantelle for helping in managing the team.
In Term 4 we are back in the pool for PE! As always, any parents/carers who can assist either in the water or helping change kids (Prep/1) are always appreciated.
Our last Big event of 2022 will be the Junior and senior swimming carnivals, scheduled for week 7 of Term 4. More details to come closer to the event!

LANDCARE
WHEN SMELL-OF-THE-BUSH MEETS ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY
When: 5:00 PM, 18 Aug 2022
Where: Rural Futures Centre, 65 Pavilion Street, Pomona
Workshop Overview - The scent of pine trees and eucalypt forests is something that most of us take for granted, along with the invigorating smell of freshly mown grass and the pungent aroma of the Green Kamala (Mallotus claoxyloides). But have you ever considered what gases are responsible for these unique smells? And is there a reason why plants release these distinctive odours in the first place? Plants in various stages of their growth cycles all release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are the gases responsible for the different odours given off by plants. But their release is no accident, and in many cases, they provide an important protective function for the plant. Even ocean plants (phytoplankton) get in on the act, emitting VOCs with a cabbage-like smell! When plants are burned in vegetation fires, the story gets more complex, with smoke containing many thousands of different VOCs in a complex chemical ‘soup’! In this talk we will discuss how and why plants emit VOCs into the air, and the complex impact this has on the chemistry of our atmosphere. We will explore some research findings from CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere that demonstrate how plant VOC emissions influence our air quality and climate.
Presenter info - Dr Sarah Lawson worked as a researcher at CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere for 18 years, specialising in measurement of VOCs in the atmosphere. Sarah was involved in a wide variety of projects, including investigating air pollution in Australian cities and regional areas, indoor air quality, studies of bushfire smoke composition, biogenic (plant) emissions and studies of marine air. Sarah’s recent (2017) PhD at Queensland University of Technology investigated sources of VOCs from the ocean and bushfire smoke. In 2021 Sarah made a career change to work with plants in the Noosa and District Landcare nursery.
