ADMIN NEWS
Welcome
As we approach the final days of Term 1, I would like to thank the many parent and community volunteers who have assisted in our classrooms, Breakfast Club and school swimming lessons. With your assistance our students are getting a great start at Pomona State School.
Some great moments of student learning and engagement have been captured this term.

- Our school ANZAC service will be held the morning of Thursday 24th
- Our P&C team have been working hard behind the scenes organising the upcoming Mother’s Day stall 8/9th
- Year 4 Students will experience a Cycle Skills session on 13th May, further information will be provided closer to this event.
- GEM program is offering a Parent and Carers Webinar at 6:30pm on the 13th May focusing on Building Resilience at Home.
Safety in our School Grounds
No dogs
Parents and community members please remember that dogs are not permitted within our grounds unless they are identified as an assistance dog.

Enter and exit the school safely
We also encourage our students to only enter and exit the school via the designated pedestrian gates. Please help model this to our students. The school driveway is a dangerous place for students to be entering and exiting our school grounds. The main gates to the school are now closed during school hours.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students that successfully took part in the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) over weeks 8 and 9. These online tests, which have been permanently moved to Term 1, were expertly organised and managed by Mrs Vacher, Mrs Brown, Mr Bartley, Mrs Whatmough and Mrs Lavender. These annual tests give students the opportunity to show off their skills in Writing, Reading, Language Convention and Numeracy. The school will receive the results early in Term 3 where we will analyse each student’s data and use this to inform our teaching and learning in the future. With a focus on Writing in 2025 we are looking forward to seeing how our students have achieved in this area.
Absences
Don’t forget to get in touch with us to let us know if your child will be away from school for any reason. Leave us a message on the absence line by phoning 54 808 222, and we will ensure your child’s attendance record is updated without having to call you to check in to ensure all is well.
Uniform Expectations
Our Year 6 students have been leading by example in recent weeks with all students in correct school uniform, school shirt, school shorts or school skort, black or white socks and a school hat. Hopefully the weather will be cooling down next term, please ensure your child has the correct school jumper.
The long-awaited Year 6 senior shirt have finally arrived and our students look dashing in the new design.

School Invoices
Thank you to the many families who have paid their outstanding invoices for Term 1, we appreciate your prompt attention to these invoices.
School Watch
Please keep our school safe over the holiday period and report any suspicious activity. Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88
Safe and Happy Holidays
To all students, staff and parents please enjoy the two weeks break over the Easter holidays. It has been an extremely busy and quick term so hopefully we all get a chance to recharge and be ready for Term 2. The first day of Term Two is Tuesday 22nd April.
CURRICULUM NEWS
NAPLAN
This week marked the closing of the NAPLAN testing window. I would like to acknowledge the hard work all of our year 3 and 5 students put in to completing the 4 tasks. They began each task with a positive attitude and were supported wonderfully by their classroom teachers to simply ‘do their best.’ The results will be available before the end of Term 3.
Term 1 Wrap Up
As we near the end of the term take a moment to ask your child what they are doing in English and Maths. We have seen some wonderful growth and effort build over the term. Even our Preps have prepared a re-tell of a familiar story. Some of our Year 3 students are delivering a reading of their adapted fairy-tale to the junior classes in the library and our 5’s and 6’s have delved into the ‘My Place’ series and are creating their own ‘My Place’ chapter with an accompanying map.
In Mathematics our year 1’s and 2’s have been engaging in mapping. While our 3’s and 4’s conducted a guided statistical investigation. Working with and comparing data displays has brought about some impressive conversations and even further investigations.
Thank you Cooroy Pomona Lions Club
While I am wrapping up the term, I would like to give a special mention to our very special Cooroy Pomona Lions Club volunteers who manage and run our breaky club each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Our students (and some staff) really look forward to the mornings when they can enjoy a piece of toast and a banana smoothy before school starts. We appreciate you!
ANAPHYLAXIS AWARENESS
We are seeking your help to support the students in our school with severe allergies.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. The most common causes of anaphylaxis in schools are allergies to food and insects (bees). To help manage allergies, our school is following the National Allergy Council’s Best Practice Guidelines for Anaphylaxis Prevention and Management in Schools.
The Best Practice Guidelines recommend an Allergy Aware approach, which means we are supporting students at risk of anaphylaxis in the following ways:
- training staff
- educating students about allergies and anaphylaxis
- teaching students that we all have different needs and to be respectful of others
- teaching students the importance of getting help immediately if their friend with allergy looks sick.
For food allergies, we are also:
- encouraging all students to practice good hand hygiene
- teaching students not to share food with friends
Food allergies are common in school aged children and avoiding the food is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction. Therefore, we have put a range of different things in place to help keep these students safe. In some classes, we may send letters home to suggest ways to support a child with food allergies that are additional to those listed above.
We have also chosen not to stock nuts and nut products in our canteen as nuts are not a staple food in most diets.
We ask that you support the school’s Allergy Aware approach so that we can increase the safety and provide and environment that meets the needs of all our students.

RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY 2025
Year 3/4 MW surveyed all of the students in our school and we asked the question: How did you travel to school today? We asked this question before and on Ride to School Day.
Many students celebrated Ride to School Day by being active and riding, walking, scooting and skateboarding to school. Before Ride to School day only 5.5% of students walked to school but on Ride to School Day 12.5% of students walked.

MAPPING WITH DRONES – AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE!
This week, our Year 5 and some Year 6 students took part in an exciting Mapping with Drones course offered by Sunshine Coast University staff specialising in Digital Technology. Over three action-packed sessions, they discovered how drones can be used to map the environment from above!
Students learned about how drones fly, how they are controlled, and the rules for using them safely. They even got hands-on experience flying small drones (under 2 kg).
17th March 2025 | 21st March 2025 – Ride to School Day |
5.5% of students walked to school | 12.5% of students walked to school |
75.5% of students travelled by car | 68.5% of students travelled by car |
4% rode their bike, scooter, skateboard | 11% rode their bike, scooter, skateboard |
15% came by bus | 8% came by bus |
The course showed just how useful drones can be for studying the world around us. It was a fantastic experience, and our students had a great time developing new skills in technology, coding, science, and mapping!
